Film Camp Wins Prestigious State Award

The Cape May Film Academy’s Young Filmmakers Movie Camp received a Citation of Excellence from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts for excellence in artistic quality, programming and public service in the arts. To present the Citation and acknowledge the importance of the work of the film festival, Secretary of State Nina Mitchell Wells and members of the New Jersey State Legislature at the State House Annex joined State Arts Council leadership on March 13, 2008.

“Citations of Excellence conferred by the Council are a signal to funders, audiences, peers and others that these organizations and projects are among the very best in our state,” noted Carol Ann Herbert, chair of the State Arts Council. This award, among the State Arts Council’s most prestigious marks of distinction, is conferred to grant applicants receiving the highest peer panel evaluation through the grant application process.
                                                                                     
“We are honored to get this award,” says J.C. Stinson, who has been on faculty for the Summer Camp since its inception. “Every year these kids work their hearts out to show us their best effort, and every year we’re more and more impressed.” Stinson points out that the Film Festival is putting on its seventh annual Young Filmmakers Movie Camp, and he is anticipating another tremendous year. “Each year it gets better,” he adds.

Tom Sims, Executive Director for the Cape May Film Society, says the camp is the cornerstone for the Cape May Film Academy. “And it’s one of the best summertime options for students who want to have fun while learning a whole new skill set,” he adds. “Last year, more than twenty participants made several films, some of which were screened at a special session at last year’s Cape May Film Festival.”

This year, Sims reports that there are several new initiatives underway from the Academy’s Young Filmmakers programming. The first is a traveling modular workshop series that has already begun to head north to Atlantic County. “We have already traveled to Oakcrest High School with the great workshops that educate and entertain local students,” Sims says. “Last week was our first installment, and one of the students said we had the best guest presentation he had ever experienced in their film program.” And that’s not all, says Sims. “Keep a lookout for a new competition the likes of which not only has this town ever seen—but the state either!”

The Cape May Film Society hosts New Jersey’s premiere Film Festival dedicated to the support and presentation of creative, challenging, groundbreaking, film/video works by New Jersey filmmakers. The Society also operates the Cape May Film Academy, which is the region’s leading educational and cultural resource for youth and adult learners interested in all facets of the cinematic experience.
