Film Fest Exclusive: A Look at New Jersey Black History

(Cape May, NJ) Rarely will you get a chance to see a more expertly filmed documentary that captures the history of race struggles in Newark, NJ. Rarer still is to see a film of this distinction presented by the filmmakers. Revolution '67 is an award-winning documentary that was featured on PBS and at film festivals around the world. This weekend, however, you can only see it in Cape May during the 2008 Cape May Film Festival Winter Program this Sunday, February 10, at 2:00 p.m. at Congress Hall.

Revolution '67 accurately and effectively captures the mood, the pain, the loss, the ambiguity, the fear and the continuing impact of the violent unrest of the summer of 1967,” says Historian Lonnie G. Bunch, founding director, Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of African American History and Culture. “This film helps us to remember a time that still inspires and haunts America.”

Marylou Tibaldo-Bongiorno & Jerome Bongiorno will be on hand to present the film and answer questions after. The husband and wife are Emmy-nominated, award-winning filmmakers who formed their own production company, Bongiorno Productions, in Newark. Marylou is an alumna of NYU's Graduate Film Program where she received the $75,000 Vague Award for Little Kings, based on a multi-award winning short - recipient of the Grand Marnier Fellowship from The New York Film Festival - and winner of several festival prizes.

“We’re truly looking forward to this presentation,” says Stefan Prosky, Curator for the Film Festival. “This program went over well at our Festival in 2007, but we offer a lot of competing programs so a lot of people didn’t get a chance to see this great work.” Admission to the program is $5 or free with a special lunch at The Blue Pig Restaurant.

The Cape May New Jersey State Film Festival is the state’s premiere film festival dedicated exclusively to the support and presentation of creative, challenging, groundbreaking film and video works by New Jersey filmmakers. The Festival is also the region’s leading educational and cultural resource for youth and adult learners interested in all facets of the cinematic experience.
