Susannah Newman (Choreographer and Filmmaker)
Formerly Dance Department Chairperson, Graduate Program Director and a University-Wide Artist, Susannah is a professor emeritus of the State University of New York, a Board member of Dance New Jersey, and resident of Cape May. Co-founder of SUNY’s original professional Resident Dance Company (1969 –75), she continued to perform the solo work of Anna Sokolow, Viola Farber, Jose Limon, Lynn Dally and others until 1984, and then to teach and to choreograph for regional and university dance companies throughout the U.S. and Europe. She was the recipient of the prestigious SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and her former students include winners of the MacArthur Genius Award, the Tony Award, the Bessie, and the Drama Critic’s Award. A frequent presenter on the subject of injury prevention for dancers, Ms. Newman is also the creator of the LNB Headcamera System and is now choreographing, shooting and editing screen dances and interactive video for live performance. Her choreography for the camera has been presented in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio and North Carolina. She has recently formed The Media And Performance Collective (MAP) with filmmaker, Susan Pellegrini, for the purpose of creating and presenting collaborative, multimedia work involving artists from film, dance, music, poetry, visual art and theatre. As well, she continues to work as artistic advisor for several NYC / NJ dance companies and as parent / advisor to son, Shawn, of Washington, D.C.
